We have experienced victories, challenges and opportunities as leaders in our county. In just a few short months I have been part of an unprecedented number of community leaders and stakeholders working together to seek answers to our ever-changing mental health crisis. There have been tangible results with many more to come in the near future, as our efforts have gained the positive attention of decision makers at the state level.
Many steps were taken in order to help the Sheriff's office retain detention officers working in the jail, including a return to overtime pay versus comp time. As a Court, we created a position for a Mental Health Diversion Officer in the jail, a first step to making real improvements in the way offenders with mental health issues are addressed.
More than 200 miles of county road were reconstructed or repaved in Phase I of the Road and Bridge Bond and the costs were under the budgeted amount. Work continues on Phase 2 of the Bond, improving about 283 miles of road over the next several years. I continue to be responsive to community members as they express concerns related to their county roads.
The Smith County Republican Party has called a county primary to be held March 5, 2024, the same day as the Presidential Preference Primary. The County Republican Primary will include all county offices that will be on the August 2024 General Election Ballot.
